MSG Michael Parnell currently serves as Assistant Principal Trombone and Unit Historian. He previously served as Principal Trombonist and Staff Arranger with The United States Continental Army Band at Ft Monroe, VA. Also, he served with the Fifth Army Band at Ft. Sam Houston, TX., and the 312th United States Army Reserve Band in Lawrence, Kansas
He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Kansas where he studied with Dr. Stephen Anderson, and Thomas Ashworth. He earned his Master of Arts in Conducting from George Mason University where he studied with Anthony Maiello, Dr. Stan Englebretson, and Dr. Harlan Parker.
Prior to his active duty service, Parnell was employed by Disneyland and Disney Studios in California. His studio experience includes recording Disney theme park music, Visa commercials, Americas Most Wanted, Discovery Channel programs, and Scarecrow and Ms. King. Movie credits include an appearance in The Next Karate Kid as part of The U. S. Army Ceremonial Band. He has also orchestrated for National Public Radio's B.J. Leiderman. Parnell is the first place winner of the National Trombone Solo Competition and the Midwest Educator's Artist Competition.
Parnell has performed with the Kansas City Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, National Symphony, Maryland Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Virginia Pops, Orchestra of Virginia Beach, Arlington Symphony, and Fairfax Symphony.
