SFC Matthew Carmichael was born in Winter Haven, Florida, and later settled with his family in Kentucky where he eventually attended Western Kentucky University. After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from WKU, he completed a Master’s degree in Saxophone Performance at Indiana University. Carmichael’s primary saxophone teachers were Tod Kerstetter, John Cipolla, and Otis Murphy. In addition, he has received instruction from Eugene Rousseau, Clifford Leaman, Steve Stusek, Joseph Lulloff, and John Sampen. His collegiate achievements include performances with the Western Kentucky University faculty woodwind quintet and the Western Kentucky University wind ensemble, along with memberships in the following academic organizations: Golden Key, Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi. He was also named a Yamaha Young Performing Artist in the summer of 2003. In June of 2006 Carmichael won an audition to join The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own."
