Before joining The U.S Army Strings SSG Powell was a fellow in the New World Symphony, “America’s Orchestral Academy”, often performing as concertmaster and soloist with many of today’s leading conductors including music director Michael Tilson Thomas. Powell was a fellowship recipient at the renowned Aspen Summer Music Festival and School and also studied at the Banff Summer Masterclass Program. An experienced chamber musician, Powell has collaborated with concert artists Midori and pianist Christopher Taylor in concert and has also made multiple appearances with chamber groups at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. As a former member of the Lucido Felice Quartet, a group focused on engaging new audiences via innovative contemporary programming, Powell became well versed in musical education outreach. His performance outreach work was further enhanced as a Da Camera Chamber Music Series of Houston Young Artist where he was a featured soloist and chamber musician. Some other ensembles Powell has performed with include the Verbier Chamber Orchestra, Thy Music Festival, and Steamboat Springs Music Festival. Before concentrating his passions fully into music, Powell pursued his interest for scientific inquiry earning a double major in neurobiology and music performance from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Powell’s principal teachers include Kathleen Winkler, David Perry, Felicia Moye, Eugene Purdue, and Naoko Tanaka.
