
Captain Richard A. Winkels, a native of Red Wing, Minnesota, serves as the Associate Conductor and Officer in Charge of The U.S. Army Concert Band. He previously served as the Executive Officer and Associate Conductor of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Band, Fort Eustis, Virginia.
Winkels holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and a Master of Music degree from the University of Nebraska. He is a third-generation soldier and began his career in military music in 2002 as a euphonium player with the First Corps Army Band at Fort Lewis, Washington. He later served with the United States Army Japan Band at Camp Zama prior to his selection as an Army Band Officer in September 2007.
He was commissioned in March of 2008 after successful completion of Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He is a graduate of the Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and the Army Band Officer Basic Course at the U.S. Army School of Music, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story, Virginia.
Winkels is a professional member of the Nebraska Music Educators Association, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and the Adjutant General Corps Regimental Association.
His military decorations include: the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon.
