Enlisted Leader

Command Sergeant Major Ross Morgan was appointed the first Command Sergeant Major of “Pershing’s Own” on December 3, 2007. His previous leadership positions with the band include Enlisted Leader and Unit Sergeant Major, Concert Band Group Leader, Brass Group Leader, Section Leader, and Principal Tuba. Performances with “Pershing’s Own” have taken him around the world. He has been active in the Washington, DC, area for over 30 years as a performer, soloist, teacher, and solo/ensemble competition adjudicator. In addition to his duties with The U.S. Army Band, he serves as principal tuba with the Capitol Band and Prelude Brass as well as a low brass clinician in local schools.

A native of Phoenix, New York, Cmd. Sgt. Maj. Morgan graduated from the Phoenix Central Schools with a New York State Regents Diploma. He continued his education at Ithaca College receiving a Bachelor of Music Education degree and then received a Master of Music degree in performance from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. His primary teachers and mentors have included Rud Trowbridge, Ronald Smith, Walter Beeler, James Linn, and David Bragunier.

Prior to entering the U.S. Army in 1974, he performed as principal tuba with the Scranton Symphony (now the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic) and the Utica (NY) Symphony Orchestra.

Cmd. Sgt. Maj. Morgan is a member of the International Tuba-Euphonium Association (ITEA) and has served as an Associate Editor of the ITEA Journal. In 1983, he helped found The U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference, serving in every capacity for the conference including Conference Chairman. He is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, Delta Chapter, a national music fraternity founded in 1898 and dedicated to “the advancement of music in America.”

His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.
