THE U.S. ARMY BAND “PERSHING’S OWN” TRAVELS TO CHINA FOR HISTORIC CONCERTS

WHO: The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Concert Band
WHAT: “Friendship and Cooperation Through Music” Musical Exchange between the US Army and The People’s Liberation Army of China

WHEN: October 29 - November 4, 2012

In 2009, Army Chief of Staff General George W. Casey initiated a military-to-military exchange program between various military operations within the U.S. Army and the People’s Liberation Army of China. The Military Band of the People’s Liberation Army came to the United States in May 2011 and performed a series of successful concerts with The U.S. Army Band in some of the nation’s most important venues like the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Avery Fisher Hall in New York City’s Lincoln Center, and on the floor of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to GEN Martin E. Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the joint concerts between The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and the Military Band of the People’s Liberation Army of China are a result of “our common efforts to build a program of sustained and reliable military-to-military contact, under the belief that such exchanges build trust, improve under- standing, and pave the way to great cooperation.”

In October 2012, the Soldier Musicians from the Army’s premier musical organization will travel to China in the second part of this historic exchange entitled “Friendship and Cooperation Through Music.” Each of the three scheduled joint concerts bring together two fine musical organizations on one stage, symbolizing the friendship and cooperation common in the shared language of music, and the bond of uniform service members with a shared sense of service, sacrifice, and a common love of country.
