Army Band's Historic Exchange with China

Washington, DC | October 31, 2012 — On Friday, October 26, 2012, The U.S. Army Concert Band departed for China where the men and women of “Pershing’s Own” are participating in the second part of a historic collaboration with the Military Band of the People’s Liberation Army of China.

In 2009, Army Chief of Staff General George W. Casey initiated a military-to-military exchange program between various military operations within the U.S. Army and the People’s Liberation Army of China. The Military Band of the People’s Liberation Army came to the United States in May 2011 and performed a series of successful concerts with The U.S. Army Band in some of the America’s most important concert venues.

Next week the ASOM staff and students of class 12-004 (AIT) will get to enjoy some of the best performance oriented training they will ever participate in with a focus on Brass. SSG Tim Sutfin Premieres New Work for Clarinet

On Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at 7:30pm, SSG Tim Sutfin will give the world premiere of a new work for clarinet and piano by the American composer Scott McAllister, as part of the Army Band-hosted Brucker Hall Chamber Music Series.

The new concerto, given the title "Epic Concerto" by the composer, is the result of a co-commission by 11 professional clarinetists. At nearly an hour in length, the piece is conceived as an entire recital program divided into seven movements. McAllister intended the work to be either performed in its entirety, or with individual movements performed as stand-alone works.

"Black Jack" Pershing founded the band, emulating European military bands he had heard during the First World War. Army Band Woodwind Quintet Tours Florida

The U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" Woodwind Quintet set off for Sarasota, FL earlier this month to perform a series of concerts and master classes in the South Florida area. The group was joined by MSG (ret) Joseph Holt on piano. Dr. Holt was the principal pianist for The U.S. Army Chorus for 20 years, and now resides in Sarasota where he is Artist-in-Residence at Faith Lutheran Church and Artistic Director of Gloria Musicae.
