National Solo Jazz Competition

The Eastern Trombone Workshop’s National Solo Jazz Competition is one of the most successful and popular jazz trombone competitions in the nation. In addition to providing valuable experience working through the competitive audition recording process, this event offers a venue for outstanding young talent the opportunity to perform with the prestigious U.S. Army Blues Jazz Ensemble. Those interested in competing will find it worth the effort.

GENERAL RULES & REQUIREMENTS

Entry recordings should be recorded live with a rhythm section. No editing of any type is permitted within a song. CD format only. Please include all contact information directly on the CD. Selections on the audition recording will be performed for the final round with no exceptions. Performers who are selected to advance to the final round will bring three copies of the changes for their tunes to the rehearsal. The winner will perform with The U.S. Army Blues Jazz Ensemble on Friday, March 19th, 2010. Please remember that your submission will be received along with many of others. Therefore, it is very important that you clearly and accurately mark your submission with the following information:

AGE REQUIREMENT

  • 29 years-old before December 1, 2009

Age requirements must by met as of December 1st, 2009. Proof of age (photocopy of driver’s license, visa, or birth certificate) must be provided with the application. Recording postmark date is December 1st, 2009. Materials will be forwarded to adjudicators on December 15, 2009, so a postal carrier should be consulted to ensure that your application packet is received before that time. NOTE: Tracking number services through postal carriers are highly recommended. Media mail service is NOT recommended. Recordings will not be returned to the applicants. Therefore, be sure to keep track of the masters (do not send master recordings, only a high quality copy on CD).

Finalists will be notified by January 15, 2010. If selected as a finalist, you will be expected to compete in the final round at the conference on Thursday, March 18, 2010. A rhythm section will be provided. If selected as the winner, you will be expected to perform as a guest on one selection with The U.S. Army Blues Jazz Ensemble on Friday, March 19, 2010. All finalists are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses.

FREQUENT CAUSES FOR DISQUALIFICATION

  • Observance of postmark deadline (please see above).
  • Proof of age (please see above).
  • An unedited recording (please see above).
  • Avoid all spoken dialogue on recording.
  • Follow all instructions regarding the labeling of CD and CD container (please see above).
