Program Information

The Concours of the Paris Conservatoire are musical contests that are held annually, and are considered important steps in the Conservatoire students’ musical education. Exploring and performing early tuba repertoire from the Paris Conservatoire Concours, composed for the petit tuba Français, brings to light many musical compositions that are rarely performed. Although petit tuba Français has faded from use, the literature that was written for this instrument is rich and can be performed on the modern tuba with slight adjustments. Some pieces require no modification if the tubist has great endurance and a strong high register. The following pieces, originally composed for the petit tuba Français, are of high quality and can be performed on modern tubas: Piccolo Suite by Pierre Max Dubois (1957, 1971), Sonatine by Jacques Castérède (1963), and Suite by Ida Gotkovsky (1953).
