Karl Schultz

Senior Chief Musician Karl F. Schultz is principal euphoniumist with the U.S. Naval Academy Band, Annapolis, MD. He began his military career in 1993 by joining the Army and serving as the euphonium soloist with The U.S. Continental Army Band, Ft. Monroe, VA and was featured on the band’s compact disc entitled The Spirit of Victory.

In 1996, Senior Chief Schultz auditioned and was selected for duty with the U.S. Naval Academy Band. Since joining the band, he has been an active soloist with the Concert Band and featured at the Tuba/Euphonium Conference with both the U.S. Army Orchestra and Brass of the Potomac. An avid brass bandsman, he has played with most of the brass bands in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

MGySgt Philip Franke
MGySgt Philip Franke joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in August 1981. In August 2004, he was named Principal Euphonium and Section Leader. MGySgt Franke began studying euphonium at age 8 and trombone at age 13, both with Charles Winking of Quincy College. After graduating from Quincy High School in 1977, he studied euphonium and trombone at the University of Illinois in Champaign where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music education. He studied euphonium with Dan Perantoni, and trombone with Robert Gray, both of the University of Illinois. MGySgt Franke, is the father of SSgt Christopher Franke, a Marine Band violin, and husband of MSgt Susan Franke, USMC (ret.), a former Marine Band violist. In addition, MGySgt Franke’s father-in-law, the late David K. Johnson, was a retired Marine Band trumpet/cornet player. The Frankes are the first family to span three generations within “The President’s Own.”

SSG Dean Miller

SSG Miller grew up in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. In 2000, he earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from West Virginia University. At WVU, he studied with Dr. Keith Jackson, Dave McCollum, and also privately with Dr. Brian Bowman. After WVU, SSG Miller attended The University of North Texas to again study with Dr. Brian Bowman. He has performed with the “Festhaus” band at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA, as well as the River City Brass Band in Pittsburgh, PA. SSG Miller won a position with The United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” in December, 2001, as a member of the Ceremonial Band.

Craig Knox

Craig Knox is Principal Tuba of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and founding member of the Center City Brass Quintet. He was previously Principal Tuba of the New World and Sacramento symphonies, Acting Principal of the San Francisco Symphony, and has performed with the Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, Minnesota and Detroit orchestras. He has recorded five acclaimed albums with the CCBQ, a low-brass album with his PSO section, and a newly-released a solo album. He has performed as soloist with the Tokyo Symphony, and will premiere a concerto by Andre Previn with the PSO in March 2012.

The U.S. Army Concert Band

The U.S. Army Concert Band has a worldwide reputa- tion for extraordinary musicianship. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Concert Band has performed in such notable concert venues as Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. The ensemble per- forms at numerous national and international events, such as the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic and the American Bandmasters Association, in addition to local events, such as its weekly concerts on the West Steps of the U.S. Capitol throughout the summer.

Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier

Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier was appointed Leader and Commander of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in August 2011. He previously served as Commander and Conductor of The U.S. Army Field Band, the first officer to command both of the Army’s top premier bands. Also, he has served as Commandant of the U.S. Army School of Music, responsible for the training of Army Band Soldiers, Noncommissioned Officers, Warrant Officers, and Commissioned Officers for the Army’s 106 bands worldwide. His previous assignments include Commander of the U.S. Army Europe Band and Chorus, Executive Officer to The Adjutant General of the Army, and the Department of the Army Staff Bands Officer, overseeing band activities for all Active, Reserve, and National Guard bands. Earlier assignments included command and staff positions around the world, to include service as an Associate Bandmaster with The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.”

Originally from Ballston Spa, New York, Col. Palmatier holds a Bachelor of Music degree, magna cum laude, in Applied Music from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, New York, and received its Minerva Award in 2010, presented annually to an alumnus who has demonstrated outstanding lifetime professional achievement. Also, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Music from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, and a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Army War College. He is currently enrolled in doctoral studies at Boston University. A member of the Army War College Association, he belongs to the Adjutant General Corps Regimental Association.

Col. Palmatier is former Director of the Rochester International Tattoo and former Principal Director of Music for the Virginia International Tattoo. He was Music Director of the Dominion Brass Band, which won the Honors Section of the North American championships in 1996. His professional affiliations include the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, the North American Brass Band Association, of which he is Past-President, and the National Band Association.

Throughout his more than three decades of distinguished service in the U.S. Army, Col. Palmatier has received numerous military honors to include two awards of the Legion of Merit and seven awards of the Meritorious Service Medal. He was the first Army Band Officer to earn both the Parachutist and Air Assault Badges and earned the right to wear a combat patch for service in El Salvador. His wife, Shirley, is a retired Army Medical Service Corps officer, and his daughter, Gabrielle, is a ballet dancer and instructor in Los Angeles and the mother of the cutest granddaughter in the world.

Captain Richard A. Winkels

Captain Richard A. Winkels, a native of Red Wing, Minnesota, serves as the Associate Conductor and Officer in Charge of The U.S. Army Concert Band. He previously served as the Executive Officer and Associate Conductor of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Band, Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Winkels holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and a Master of Music degree from the University of Nebraska. He is a third-generation soldier and began his career in military music in 2002 as a euphonium player with the First Corps Army Band at Fort Lewis, Washington. He later served with the United States Army Japan Band at Camp Zama prior to his selection as an Army Band Officer in September 2007.

He was commissioned in March of 2008 after successful completion of Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He is a graduate of the Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and the Army Band Officer Basic Course at the U.S. Army School of Music, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek - Fort Story, Virginia.

Winkels is a professional member of the Nebraska Music Educators Association, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and the Adjutant General Corps Regimental Association.

His military decorations include: the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon.
