The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” announces a vacancy for BARITONE SAXOPHONE with the Army’s premier jazz ensemble, The U.S. Army Blues.

The U.S. Army Blues, part of the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Army. After informal beginnings in 1970, this 18-piece ensemble became an official element of the United States Army Band in 1972. Comprised of exceptional jazz musicians from across the nation, the Army Blues strive to fulfill their mission through public concerts, educational outreach, and the preservation of the tradition of America’s unique art form: jazz.

The Army Blues have performed at prestigious venues such as the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, Birdland and Blues Alley in Washington, DC. The band has shared the stage with jazz greats such as Dave Brubeck, Doc Severinsen, Stanley Turrentine, Slide Hampton, Dr. Billy Taylor, Kevin Mahogany, and Terrell Stafford. The Army Blues perform at national conferences such as the Jazz Education Network annual conference, the International Trumpet Guild conference, the International Trombone Conference, and the Midwest Band Clinic. The musicians of the Army Blues perform at the White House, the Vice President’s Residence, the Department of State, and for high-level military protocol and ceremonial events in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

Main duties will include rehearsals and performances with The U.S. Army Blues (large jazz ensemble). Additional duties include playing in jazz combos, The U.S. Army Band Downrange (a 3 horn Pop/Funk/R&B popular music group), and The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band.

All applicants must have U.S. citizenship due to a security clearance requirement. All invited applicants will be given instructions to coordinate pre-screening with their regional Military Entrance Processing Station to ensure they meet entrance requirements for enlistment in The U.S. Army prior to attending the live audition. Individuals who are offered the position following the live audition must enlist and begin Basic Combat Training prior to their 35th birthday.


Auditions will be held at Brucker Hall, home of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” at 400 McNair Road, Fort Myer, Virginia 22211-1306.

Travel expenses for civilians will be paid for by The U.S. Army pending enlistment qualification and funding approval. Military personnel should refer to their respective units to request travel funding. The audition will include the performance of prepared excerpts, sight-reading and jazz improvisation.

Applicants must demonstrate strong, versatile abilities in the following areas:

  • Jazz soloist and ensemble performance
  • Woodwind doubling on bass clarinet, Bb clarinet and flute
  • Strong reading capabilities
  • Proficiency in a variety of musical styles
  • Additional abilities such as arranging/composing will be considered but not required

  • An audio recording with either a live rhythm section or play-a-long program/recording with the following selections:
    1. All selections to be performed on Baritone Saxophone unless specified otherwise
    2. “Along Came Betty” by Benny Golson , medium swing, quarter note=122-132 (head + two-choruses solo)
    3. “Sophisticated Lady” by Duke Ellington (jazz ballad, head + one-chorus solo)
    4. “Eternal Triangle” by Sonny Stitt, quarter note=280-290 (head + three to four-choruses solo)
    5. Funk/pop style tune of choice, straight 8th notes (head + solo)
    6. Flute excerpt (download music) quarter note=100bpm
    7. Bass Clarinet excerpt (download music) quarter note=100bpm


  • PDF files for all documents including photos
  • audio files should be recorded at a high sampling rate and saved in a format with minimal compression to better enhance sound quality
  • if possible upload high quality audio files to a folder on Google Drive or Dropbox and share the link in your application email
