The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the U.S. Army’s premier musical organization, announces a vacancy for DRUMS with The U.S. Army Band Downrange.

Downrange, a dynamic element of the world-renowned United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”, is a talented 6-piece rhythm section (2 guitars, 2 keyboards, bass and drums), often with horns, and a group of 4 vocalists that perform a wide variety of original arrangements of popular music including Rock, Pop, Funk, R&B and today’s Country. Members of this exciting group enjoy sharing their talents in and around the Washington, D.C. area, performing in venues such as The Kennedy Center and The White House, traveling the country and also abroad.

Main duties will include rehearsals and performances with The U.S. Army Band Downrange (pop/rock ensemble). Additional duties include performing in small jazz ensemble and playing with the U.S. Army Blues, the Strolling Strings, and the U.S. Army Ceremonial Band.

All applicants must have U.S. citizenship due to a security clearance requirement. All invited applicants will be given instructions to coordinate pre-screening with their regional Military Entrance Processing Station to ensure they meet entrance requirements for enlistment in The U.S. Army prior to attending the live audition. Individuals who are offered the position following the live audition must enlist and begin Basic Combat Training prior to their 35th birthday.

Applicants must demonstrate strong, versatile abilities in the following areas:

  • Ensemble performance, both small and large group
  • Improvisational Skills
  • Exceptional sight reading capabilities
  • Proficiency in the following musical styles: Jazz, Rock, Pop, Funk, Country, R&B


Auditions will be held at Brucker Hall, home of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” at 400 McNair Road, Fort Myer, Virginia 22211-1306.

Travel expenses for civilians will be paid for by The U.S. Army pending enlistment qualification and funding approval. Military personnel should refer to their respective units to request travel funding. The audition will include the performance of prepared excerpts and sight-reading.


  • Resume including email address
  • Full-length photograph
  • Military applicants must include their Enlisted Records Brief, or equivalent, and a Commander’s letter of intent
  • Audio recordings or videos containing the following, either with a metronome or with a band:
    1. “Message in a Bottle” by the Police
    2. “Jupiter” by Earth, Wind and Fire
    3. “The Ocean” by Led Zeppelin
    4. A medium swing song or groove with some improvisation
    5. A Latin groove of applicant’s choice
    6. A selection of the applicant’s choice that demonstrates their strongest attribute

  • if possible upload high quality audio files to a folder on Google Drive or Dropbox and share the link in your application email
